resident evil as a video game franchise chronicles humanity’s struggle against bioterrorism as viruses & other bio-organic weapons, primarily created by the umbrella corporation, unleash zombies, mutants, & horrifying creatures. the series follows recurring protagonists through harrowing survival horror scenarios, from the isolated horrors of the spencer mansion to the crisis of the raccoon city outbreaks.

the resident evil franchise is so special to me & i'm extremely thankful for capcom's creative team & everything they've done for us, the fans. my memories of the games start all the way back in my childhood, the day i picked up resident evil 4 on the wii , & i continue to make new ones to this day as an adult in my twenties. i've invested so much of myself in the series & it's all been so worth it. naturally i have varying experiences with the franchise & a couple strong opinions here & there, but at the end of the day, i love resident evil. it is & always will be one of my oldest & most special friends.

the timeline

resident evil 0 - july 23rd, 1998
ecliptic express incident
raccoon city police department’s s.t.a.r.s. bravo team is dispatched to investigate a series of murders in the arklay mountains. their helicopter crashes en route, & medic rebecca chambers discovers the ecliptic express train, whose passengers & crew have been transformed into zombies by the t-virus. she meets billy coen, a former marine prisoner, & together they navigate an abandoned umbrella training facility. there, they learn that dr. james marcus & his partner oswell e. spencer developed the t-virus, combining the progenitor virus with leech dna. escaping the self-destructing facility, rebecca returns to hq & helps billy fake his death so he can live as a civilian. she then sets out to the mansion to find the rest of the bravo team.

resident evil - july 24th, 1998
spencer mansion incident
alpha team is dispatched to locate the missing bravo team. members chris redfield, jill valentine, barry burton, & albert wesker are forced to seek shelter in a nearby mansion, where they encounter monsters created by umbrella corporation’s experiments with the t-virus. they discover that umbrella has been conducting illegal bioweapon research. wesker, revealed to be a double agent working for umbrella, activates a bioweapon known as the tyrant & injects himself with a strain of the t-virus. after a confrontation, the tyrant is defeated & wesker is seemingly killed. the remaining s.t.a.r.s. members escape the mansion & return to raccoon city, realizing the extent of umbrella’s corruption.

resident evil 3: nemesis - september 28th 1998
outbreak in raccoon city
raccoon city is overrun by a t-virus outbreak, a bioweapon secretly developed by umbrella corporation. jill attempts to escape the city while being pursued by nemesis, a bio-organic weapon programmed to eliminate surviving s.t.a.r.s. members. along the way, she encounters members of the umbrella biohazard countermeasure service (u.b.c.s.), including carlos oliveira, & navigates through the city searching for an escape route. jill & carlos locate an underground umbrella facility where they confront nemesis & obtain a vaccine for the t-virus infection, though a secret operative, nikolai zinoviev, destroys the vaccine before being killed. jill & carlos eventually defeat nemesis & escape the city by helicopter just as the u.s. government launches a missile strike to destroy raccoon city, eradicating the outbreak.

resident evil 2 - september 29th, 1998
outbreak in raccoon city
rookie police officer leon s. kennedy & college student claire redfield arrive in raccoon city during a t-virus outbreak. the pair navigate the rpd independently, encountering survivors, including sherry birkin, the daughter of umbrella scientist william birkin, who has injected himself with the g-virus & contaminated the city’s water supply with both his g-virus & the t-virus. leon meets ada wong, who claims to be an fbi agent but is revealed to be a mercenary attempting to acquire the g-virus. both leon & claire confront mutated birkin, who hunts them down. after defeating birkin & saving sherry, the three escape the outbreak.

resident evil: code veronica - december 27th-28th 1998
rockfort island incident
claire is captured by umbrella & imprisoned on rockfort island, where a t-virus outbreak occurs, & she escapes with the help of inmate steve burnside. they face the island’s commander, alfred ashford, who pursues claire for revenge. claire & steve flee the island by plane, but alfred directs it toward another facility. meanwhile, chris arrives on the island, searching for claire, & encounters wesker, who seeks a sample of the t-veronica virus. claire & chris reunite while steve is fatally mutated by the virus. the siblings confront alexia ashford, who is infected with t-veronica. defeating alexia, the two escape the facility, while wesker retrieves steve’s body for further experimentation.

resident evil: the darkside chronicles - 1998-2002
javier incident
during a mission in south america, leon & his mentor jack krauser are sent to stop the spread of the t-virus & intercept bioweapons controlled by javier hidalgo, a former umbrella researcher & local drug lord. the village is overrun by zombies & experimental bio-organic weapons. leon & krauser encounter javier’s daughter, manuela, & his wife, hilda, who has been transformed into a bioweapon by the t-veronica virus. krauser severely injures his arm, ending his military career. javier merges with a bioweapon, the v-complex, but is ultimately defeated. the survivors escape via helicopter, while krauser, feeling weak & sidelined by leon, fakes his death & later seeks out wesker.

resident evil 4 - autumn 2004
los illuminados incident
leon, now a u.s. government agent, is sent to rural spain to rescue ashley graham, the president’s daughter, who has been kidnapped by a cult called los illuminados. the cult & its followers are infected with a mind-controlling parasite known as las plagas. leon teams up with luis sera, a former researcher for the cult, who helps him understand the parasite & locate a temporary cure. he also encounters ada wong, who is pursuing a sample of las plagas for her own employer. he faces infected villagers & cult members, including the castle’s lord ramon salazar, before confronting the cult leader, osmund saddler. leon defeats saddler & destroys the parasite’s influence. ada escapes with a sample of las plagas, while leon & ashley use a specialized device to remove the parasite & escape the island.

resident evil: revelations - 2005
queen zenobia incident
after the destruction of terragrigia by the fbc using a solar satellite, the bioterrorist group il veltro resurfaces with a plan to spread the t-abyss virus through the oceans. bsaa agents jill valentine & chris redfield, alongside parker luciani & jessica sherawat, investigate a series of b.o.w. attacks connected to veltro, discovering the group’s schemes aboard the abandoned cruise ship queen zenobia. they uncover fbc director morgan lansdale’s collusion with veltro to manipulate global bioterror funding, neutralize the t-abyss virus, & expose lansdale’s crimes. the mission results in the collapse of the fbc & the defeat of veltro’s leader jack norman.

resident evil 5 - august 2006-march 6th 2009
kijuju autonomous zone incident
chris & jill track down wesker, only to find that wesker has killed their target, spencer. during their confrontation, jill sacrifices herself to save chris but is captured & brainwashed by wesker. years later, in 2009, wesker & tricell cause a bioterror outbreak in west africa, using plagas & viruses derived from previous experiments, including those connected to krauser. chris teams up with bsaa agent sheva alomar to investigate. they face numerous biopweapons & the uroboros virus—capable of transforming humans into powerful, regenerative monsters. they encounter a brainwashed jill, who they manage to free. chris & sheva thwart wesker’s plan to release uroboros & defeat him.

resident evil: revelations 2 - january 2011
sein island experiment
alex wesker is slowly succumbing to illness & develops the t-phobos virus to create a superhuman vessel for her consciousness. to test her experiments, she abducts terrasave members, including claire & moira burton, as well as a young girl named natalia korda. claire & moira are captured & fight the mutated “afflicted” & uroboros-infected humans. meanwhile, barry arrives on the island & protects natalia. in the final confrontation, alex injects herself with uroboros, mutating into a bioweapon. claire, moira, barry, & natalia work together to defeat her, stopping her plan & ending her experiments.

resident evil 6 - december 2012-june 2013
bio-terrorism in tall oaks, lanshiang & edoria republic
carla radames, under the direction of derek simmons, develops the c-virus & helps form neo-umbrella, sparking a global bio-terror outbreak. sherry, now a dso agent, is tasked with protecting jake muller, albert wesker’s son, whose blood can produce a c-virus vaccine. they're captured by neo-umbrella & hunted by the bioweapon ustanak. meanwhile, chris leads a bsaa team but targets carla, believing her to be ada wong, while simmons infects the u.s. president, triggering a tall oaks outbreak that leon survives. the protagonists converge in china, where leon confront simmons, & chris & his team battle c-virus bioweapons. carla is killed by the real ada, who destroys her enhanced research. sherry & jake use jake’s antibodies to create a vaccine, ending the outbreaks worldwide.

resident evil 7 - july 19th-20th 2017
baker house incident
a secret organization acquires the dna of mother miranda’s daughter, & create eveline, a bioweapon. while being transported on a cargo ship, a mold outbreak kills the entire crew except for mia winters. the ship crashes in the louisiana bayou, where jack baker discovers mia & eveline & brings them to his home. eveline infects the baker family & in 2017, ethan winters is drawn to the bakers’ plantation by a message from mia, his wife, who has been missing for years. he faces the baker family & is killed by jack, only to unknowingly be revived by the mold. he develops a serum to counteract the infection, using it to neutralize jack & mia. with the help of chris, he defeats eveline & escapes the plantation with mia.

resident evil: village - february 8th-10th 2021
village incident
ethan & mia are living peacefully in europe with their daughter, rose, until chris seemingly kills mia & kidnaps ethan & rose. ethan awakens in a mysterious village under siege by lycans, vampires, & monstrous creatures, & begins a desperate search for his daughter. he learns that four powerful lords serve mother miranda, a god-like matriarch who seeks to resurrect her deceased daughter by spreading the mold. ethan eventually discovers that the mia who died was actually miranda in disguise, & that rose is the key to miranda’s plan due to her inherited mold abilities. after a series of battles against the lords & miranda herself, ethan sacrifices himself to destroy the mold’s source, the megamycete, entrusting rose & mia to chris.

resident evil 9: requiem - october 2026
elpis incident
fbi analyst grace ashcroft investigates the mysterious deaths of former raccoon city survivors, returning to wrenwood hotel, where her mother alyssa, a raccoon city outbreak survivor, was murdered. she discovers that former umbrella scientist victor gideon is behind the attacks & is seeking her as the “key” to unlock elpis, a secret project tied to spencer & the t-virus. leon & sherry join the investigation, uncovering gideon & zeno's plans, a connections operative. grace ultimately accesses elpis, revealing it to be a powerful antiviral. with elpis, leon is cured, gideon is defeated, & bsaa forces rescue grace & leon as the ark facility collapses, ending the outbreak.
